It was a fantastic evening for Labour in Plymouth in the local elections last night, with Labour winning control of Plymouth City Council. Labour gained four new councillors across the city, including the fantastic Gareth Derrick in Ham ward and Pam Buchan in Honicknowle ward (which includes West Park and Ernesettle). And there was no better way to celebrate our win, that with a surprise visit from Jeremy Corbyn on Plymouth Hoe.
Communities right across Plymouth rejected Conservative politics in our city - they want a council that gets the basics right and puts pride back into our fantastic city. Too many people I've spoken to in recent weeks have been affected by austerity - from Tory underfunding of our NHS, proposed naval cuts, and by failing schools.
Last night's result in Plymouth sends a message loud and clear to the Prime Minister and to current Tory MP for Plymouth Moor View Mr Mercer. People here have had enough of callous cuts, empty words, and vanity politics. They have chosen a Labour Council. Next up is a Labour Government. A Labour Government with two Labour MPs for Plymouth, working together in the best interest of our great city.
